Pre-Marital Therapy

If you found this page, you likely have question’s about how premarital therapy works and whether it’s for you and your partner. Below are some answers I hope you find helpful. You can always contact me if you have any additional questions.

What is Pre-marital Therapy?

Premarital counseling/Premarital therapy is a short-term therapeutic approach that focused specifically on creating the foundation for a lasting relationship.

How does it work?

I utilize evidence based assessment tools created by The Gottman Institute along with individualized sessions that address potential areas of conflict within a relationship. Additionally, I teach listening techniques and conflict management skills, to help you stay connected throughout all the ups and downs in life.

  • In the first session (70 minutes) with both partners present we discuss what it is like to be in the relationship currently, how the relationship has evolved over time.

  • Then I will meet with each partner for an individual session to discuss individual goals/hopes for therapy and gather more information about family history and background.

  • After the first three session I will send you each extensive questionnaires, developed from Gottman’s Institutes research, that are designed to provide an in-depth evaluation of strengths and challenges in your relationship.

  • From the previous sessions and the assessments I can better tailor therapy to your relationship needs and provide personalized feedback for when we meet together again.

  • At our forth session we will go over feedback feedback about the strengths and challenge. We will go over the elements of a the Sound Relationship House and develop a plan on what we need to target in subsequent sessions.

  • Subsequent sessions will utilize this plan and will also include topics like: Finances/career, children and parenting,  division of household labor and mental load, intimacy trust, and spiritual/religious beliefs.

How Long Does it Take and How Much Does it Cost?

The number of pre-marital counseling is usually between 6 and 10 sessions with sessions typically occurring once a week.

Pre-martial Session are $200 per session. This price includes the assessment and review along with a customized therapy plan and a list of tailored tools and guidance for you once therapy is concluded.

Is the Religious Based Counseling?

Pre-marital counseling is non-religious based meaning that counseling will not utilize any specific religious doctrine or beliefs. I see couples from all faiths, spiritual, or non-faith backgrounds.

Make dedicated, nonnegotiable time for each other a priority, and never stop being curious about your partner. Don’t assume you know who they are today, just because you went to bed with them the night before. In short, never stop asking questions. But ask the right kind of questions.
